Midseason awards: Honoring the standout performers so far in 2017

A familiar feeling is beginning to sink in at the midway point of the 2017 season. Alabama and Clemson have looked like the two best teams in the country by far and the biggest debate might be whether the Tigers or the Tide will be No. 1 when the first College Football Playoff rankings are released on Oct. 31.

There will be time to settle that debate. For now, let’s decide which players, coaches and teams have been most impressive — and most disappointing — in the first half of the season.

“Hell no,” Leach said. “As soon as I saw [then-Mississippi State head coach] Jackie Sherrill I shook his hand and told him I was damn impressed.”

But the hand that Sherrill shook was all but guaranteed to be dirty, no matter whose hand he was shaking. This is because there were only a few old working sinks in the visiting locker room. These were used (or not) after utilizing one of two toilets — located in the center of the room for all to view — that had no seats, which were assumed to have been broken off by enraged previous visitors.

“The most impressive part, though: It was almost artistic,” Leach said, a little too excitedly. “Sitting on the floor right between the toilets with exactly one roll of toilet paper — it was exquisite.”

Former coach Dave Tippett and the Coyotes also agreed to part ways, and Chayka replaced Tippett with Pittsburgh Penguins assistant coach Rick Tocchet, who played for and had a previous stint as an assistant with the Coyotes.
